God brings people to Faith Lutheran Church that want to know more about Jesus and the church. First Steps @ Faith is an opportunity to be mentored in a life of discipleship. For the last several months a group of dedicated people have been gathering to think, read, and pray about how to encourage discipleship at Faith. These folks are going to be the sponsors (kind of like a mentor, or guide) for our candidates (those wanting to be baptized or know more about the faith).
But who is First Steps @ Faith for? The simple answer is anyone wanting to grow in their walk with Jesus. While it is designed for people preparing for baptism, it can be attended by anyone. First Steps @ Faith is placing a structure in motion that will make our congregation more visitor-friendly and seeker-ready. First Steps @ Faith positions us as a welcome place for people to dip their toes into the Christian faith. Seekers are encouraged to bring their doubts and concerns.
Our culture is increasingly more disassociated with the Christian faith. First Steps @ Faith will hopefully create an organic community to test-drive the claims of Jesus in a relational framework. Our job as the church is to be ready to welcome those who come to us asking, “Who is Jesus and why does it matter?”
We can imagine lots of different kinds of people participating in First Steps @ Faith. Consider these examples:
- Some persons in our community might be open to exploring a life of discipleship with Christ if they heard that there was a process of study, mentorship, and prayer in place in our congregation to support them in their time of inquiry and preparation for baptism.
- Some members of our congregation might have spouses that attend worship occasionally but have never been baptized or formally engaged the church.
- A single parent or couple might be interested in having their child baptized, but they feel like they need a more solid foundation to their own faith before trying to teach their child about believing in God.
- For many adults, engaging in Bible study and sharing their faith experiences ended with confirmation when they were adolescents. There might be some adults in our church or community who are already baptized but want an adult renewal of their faith.
If any of this sounds intriguing to you, we would like to invite you to an interest meeting for First Steps @ Faith on Sunday, August 7 at 12:00 PM in the Community Room (300) in the Faith Center. There you will hear more about the process and meet others who are on the journey.
